Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Margi creates a project that you and your sweetie will adore: stocking garters made from old fishnets!

Materials: One pair holey fishnets (colored works best!), scissors, seam ripper, needle and thread, stickpins, embellishments as desired (bows, buttons, sequins, etc.)

Time: Approx. 1 hour for a set

Step 1: Dissect your fishnets!

Grab an old or holey pair of fishnets. Cut the elastic waistband from the top of the fishnets. This should be enough elastic for both garters.

Step 2: Rip the seam!

Using your seam ripper, undo the waistband seam holding the elastic to the tights. You should now have one long piece of elastic.

Step 3: Measure your thigh!

Wrap the elastic around your thigh at the point where you want the garter to hold up your stockings, pulling it tight enough to stay put but slack enough to be comfortable. Allow another 1/2″ for finishing, and cut the elastic to size. Measure the length of the other garter using the remainder.

Step 4: Cut up your fishnet material!

Cut a swath of the fishnets directly below the waistband that will be wide enough to completely wrap around the piece of elastic.

Step 5: Sew your garter!

Wrap the fishnet material around the elastic, pin it together, and whipstitch loosely along the sides and bottom edge (don’t stitch too tightly because the elastic needs to stay stretchy).

Step 6: Finish pretty!

Finish your garter by sewing the two ends together. Add a decorative bow, button or sequins to embellish your garter, as your heart desires.

Step 7: Show some leg!

Pull on a pair of an awesome thigh highs, slide on your new garters, and you’ve got craftylicious legs!

  • I’m tempted to wear the garter sans thigh high… like a surprise! Thanks for the project idea girls.

  • Sounds like a very interesting concept! Be nice to my principal peak A joke for you! Reporter: Who would I blame if California fell into the Pacific Ocean? Geologist: It would be San Andreas fault.
